THE PLAYERS Championship - Final Round

THE PLAYERS Championship

TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Somehow the #1 seed in the WGC Cadillac Match Play at Harding Park in San Francisco was able to survive the new group format and get through the 16-man single elimination bracket to win the trophy. Rory McIlroy was down late on the back nine in 3 of the last 5 matches he played and yet somehow found a way to pull all of them out. It was a great week out in San Francisco as many players got their first look at TPC Harding Park, a course that will host the 2020 PGA Championship in 5 years. Team BLS was able to get out to Harding to take in a few rounds in person and root on our players. Sadly, our winning streak came to an end in San Francisco, but FOX’s pick of Paul Casey had a real shot to get us to 4 straight outright winners (Casey lost a late lead to McIlroy in the quarterfinals and then got food poisoning overnight prior to the suspended match resuming in the morning). Ryan Moore played awful for R-O and never had a chance after day 1. DraftKings did not offer any contests during the Match Play, but we look forward to getting back on that horse this week. All was not lost for BLS though as our breakdown of the Keegan Bradley vs. Miguel Angel Jimenez fued (what the tournament will surely be remembered for) was picked up by Golf.com and made Sports Illustrated’s Weekend Hot Clicks. It would be great to have the Match Play in San Francisco every single year, but this was just a one-time thing as the tournament will move to Austin Country Club for at least the next 4 years starting in 2016 (we love Austin, Texas – you can bet we’ll be attending this tournament again soon). The tournament will also have a new date on the schedule and will not be held the week prior to THE PLAYERS Championship as it was this year. It’s rare to have two huge tournaments in back-to-back weeks and on different coasts, but that’s what the best players in the world are facing as they complete the 2 week stretch in Ponte Vedra Beach this weekend.

We’ve made it to the PGA Tour’s flagship event to be played on its home course, The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass for the 42nd year in a row. The Stadium Course is one of the most famous courses in the world, loved by the fans and tolerated by the players as trouble lurks on just about ever hole on the Pete Dye design. Almost every single year, the winner is determined by who can handle the last 3 spectacular holes the best under enormous pressure with a PLAYERS Championship in the balance. The field is the strongest of the year, each and every year, so the winner will have earned the title at a tournament that some are pushing for to become the 5th major. 13-under-par seems like the score needed to bring home the trophy as each of the last 4 winners’ score was exactly that, pretty weird! At 7,215 yards, the bombers don’t really have much of an advantage on the Stadium Course and putting the ball in the fairway seems to be much more important as we’ve seen two of the shorter hitters in recent memory, Tim Clark and Fred Funk, each hoist the crystal trophy in the past. As always with a course so close to the ocean, wind will be a factor – the first couple of days should see moderate winds that should calm down on the weekend. The Tour is back in Florida, so rain cannot be ruled out at anytime during the event. THE PLAYERS Championship is always one of the best tournaments to watch on TV, so it should be a fun weekend for golf fans everywhere. Here’s our picks for this week at the home of The PGA Tour.

BillyR-O‘s Pick — Billy Horschel – (67-1)

The PLAYERS is the last tournament in the 1st half of the One and Done Fantasy season. With last week’s poor performance by Ryan Moore, I still have no chance to finish in the money for the 1st half, so I’ll have to once again take a player a little under the radar to try to win a weekly prize that I won’t have to split with too many others. I like the way Bill Horschel played last week at the WCG Cadillac Match Play. His driving and putting were on point and he had Rory McIlroy on the ropes in his final match of the group stage, but let him off the hook on the last couple of holes. Driving will be at a premium this week and if Billy can continue to hit fairways, I really like his chances at TPC Sawgrass. The fact that he lives locally and will have massive support from all the Florida Gator supporters in attendance shouldn’t hurt either. I feel like the 1st half of this fantasy season could have been amazing had I just caught a little bit of luck. With 6 2nd place finishes so far in 2015, it’s hard to get too down about my season standing. I think I’ll have a great shot to cash in the 2nd half of the season which starts next week.

RoryFOX‘s Pick – Rory McIlroy – (8-1)

My oh my, what a bad time for a stomach bug. Paul Casey, the #37 ranked golfer in the WGC field nearly made an epic run to the semi’s last week, but Rory battled him, forcing an overnight playoff which was quickly over as Casey duffed a food poisoning induced chip shot. It is what it is. Paul Casey might have had a fairly easy route to the finals and could very well have won, but he was bested by the world’s #1 golfer. Moving to this week. I’m going to ride the coat tails of the guy that knocked me out of a chance at a 3 week winning pick run. I haven’t used Rory to date and his game is clearly prime for a run at THE PLAYERS. No more analysis necessary. When the best ball striker in the land has his U.S. soil game in prime condition and you have him left in your pool; it’s a no brainer. Jaeger bombs anyone?
