Tragedy at Burning Man

According to Scott Kaufman of www.rawstory.com

A woman attending the Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert died Thursday morning when she fell under a bus carrying other attendees, according to the event’s official blog. No foul play is suspected, the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said. The woman’s identity will not be released until her next of kin have been notified. Burning Man co-founder Marian Goodell said that “this is a terrible accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and campmates. Black Rock Rangers and Emergency Services Department staff are providing support to those affected.”

On a more positive note – SUNRISE!

There was a wedding today on the Playa!

This has to be one of the coolest DJ booths on the planet. Markus Schulz rocked this thing last night.

Just your standard fire-breathing dragon ride. No Big Deal!

Here’s the first official drone video of the 2014 festival.

A lot of burners apparently stayed in the Grand Sierra parking lot last night as well as the Walmart parking lot nearby.

BM2 2

Sea of RVs at the Grand Sierra.

Fittingly, the Nugget offered up some Monday night mud wrestling, which this Burner took in while waiting to get into the festival this morning.

A good number of Burners also camped out at Pyramid Lake, which is in between Reno and Black Rock, Nevada.

BM2 1

There was an impromptu party at Pyramid last night.

As the festival gets close to going full-steam-ahead today, here’s an awesome time-lapse video from last year that can illustrate what is about to go down in the Nevada Desert. Everyone has been touting this epic footage up on social media.

Apparently former presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has landed in Reno and is on his way to Burning Man. He will be speaking on Thursday? Well that’s an interesting turn of events.

It’s clear and dusty on day 2 on the Playa.

What a great photo! All is well after a rocky start to the annual bash in Black Rock.

Skrillex and Diplo are en route to Burning Man people. Doesn’t get any better than that!

Pretty sick Chuck Taylor ride that someone made!

Sundown on the Playa! It’s about to go down!

Night 2 of Burning Man is a sea of bright lights. A good time (and more) is being had by all!

When a BREAKING NEWS bulletin flashed across my TV screen here in Sacramento, California around 5:00 PM Pacific and read: FLASH FLOOD WARNING – in and around Reno, Nevada – the first thing I thought about was Burning Man, the annual festival which opened Monday and runs through Labor Day. Sure enough, it looks like the rain has caused some problems.

Organizers are now encouraging people on their way to Burning Man to hold off until at least tomorrow afternoon. One can only imagine how crazy it’s going to get in Reno and the surrounding Nevada towns tonight as some of the 70,000 people expected to take part in this year’s neo-hippie fest look for a place to stay. Reports from last year indicated that Reno alone brought in close to $55 million as a result of Burning Man traffic. It should be a shit-show at all the casinos for the next 20 hours or so. We imagine the party will go down on the side of the road tonight as well as full cars wait to get in. In fact, it looks like the roadside bash has already started.

Here are some pictures that were taken from the air prior to the rain this afternoon. It looks like a good number of people are already on the (now muddy) playa. This year’s festival should be even dirtier than usual with this wet and wild start.

BM 2

A good amount of party-people arrived in time to get in.

BM 1

The campers with the Luxury RVs are loving life right now.

At least The Burning Man statue is ready to rock in Black Rock.

UPDATE: 10:29 PM

Burning Man organizers just announced that the gates and roads leading to the shit show will reopen at 6 AM Pacific tomorrow morning.

For now, the roadside partying continues!
